Impact Recycling has secured £7 million in funding from Nestlé UK & Ireland and Innovate UK to advance commercial deployment of its BOSS 2D technology — a breakthrough separation process designed to recycle flexible and multilayer plastic packaging at scale.

Why this matters

Flexible plastic packaging represents one of the most challenging and voluminous waste streams in the UK. Conventional optical sorting cannot reliably separate the multilayer laminates and co-extruded films that make up the majority of this stream, meaning large volumes are currently exported or sent to energy recovery.

BOSS 2D applies the same water-based density separation principles as BOSS 3D, adapted to handle two-dimensional sheet materials. The Innovate UK co-funding reflects the strategic importance of the technology to UK circular economy targets, and Nestlé UK & Ireland’s participation brings direct brand owner commitment to closing the loop on their own packaging.

The new facility

The new site, supported by this investment, was targeted for operational readiness in Summer 2024. It marks the first commercial-scale BOSS 2D deployment, designed to demonstrate throughput, product quality, and commercial offtake from a single integrated site.
